Some good sounds at the Mind Your Head 3 anniversary show with a whole musical spectrum from postrock electro from Hong Kong's Snoblind to postpunk rock with the Lovesong and a headline set from Canadian band Dearest. It's amazing what you can do with an Apple.First on were postrock duo Snoblind, with some electro jazz-funk,loops and beats from a mac,a turntable, some jazzy sax and a bass to provide us with some psychedelic reworkings of 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Tomorrow never Knows'. Snoblind's post rock style is quite different from the other Hong Kong bands playing in this genre and is much more dance-influenced.The duo are Regina and Vincent and their music is bass -heavy triphop meets psychedelia.
Juicyning had lots of fans at this gig.The band's set was too much of a mix of comedy and rock and too cantopop for my taste but their many fans seemed to appreciate.
It's been a few months since I last saw Unixx at Club Cixi and in that short time the band's live set has become harder and rockier. The band played a driving, energetic set of psychedelic rock in which the guitar noise of Ed blends well with the pop vocals of Sean ,driven by the melodic bass of Dicky and pounding drums from Tatsu on songs from their current 'Nasty Fantasy' album like 'Black Shadow','So Far Away' and 'Unisexx'.Just add some electronica from Tomoyand you have a great blend of psychedelic indie. Why don't this band play more gigs? You can pick it up the at Zoo records.
The Lovesong are one of the best bands in Hong Kong with a great debut (Deux Mille Sept)already out and some great live shows. The band play an angular, postpunk rock This set featured some of the Deux Mille Sept songs like 'Chinese Romance' and a blistering version of 'Eastern Moments,Western Skies' as well as newer material like'1978 is The New Year'.The band have already become favourites with their live sets on the Asian circuit and were sought out to support Nine Inch Nails last year.Their live sound is energetic pospunk at its best with Nic's dub -heavy bass sound, the interlocking guitars of Ben and Ephraim and the frantic,high-on-anxiety vocals combined with Lee yat Ding's explosive percussion creating a sound that is both loud and infectious.
Mind Your Head also gave us a chance to see Canadian band Dearest who kicked off their Asian tour in Hong Kongand the band's audience rapport was awesome as they blasted their way through a set of well-crafted pop rock including 'Remember Me',Here's To Never Getting Old','Don't Call It Love' and 'Last Goodnight'.'The material is catchy with big hooks and a great headline set .Although this band are used to playing to bigger audiences ,they gave the crowd everything they had.The band is Andre (vocals, guitar),Sasha(guitar),Randie (bass) and Miles (drums). The band proved something that we already know from the international success of bands like Arcade Fire,Wolf Parade,Tokyo Police Club and so many more:Canada is the most exciting place on the earth in terms of indie bands!
