Review of gig with video highlights.....featuring rock, postrock and shoegaze A rock art show with photography by Danakil.....
Spermatic Chord opened the show in extravagant fashion and their set was rich in musical invention and adventurousness.I thought immediately of The Polyphonic Spree but their musical style is closer to Sufjan Stevens rambling ,intricate ,multi-instrumental compositions with a darker edge.Their influences are cited as math rock, and free jazz. The material was challenging but they livened up their set with flamboyant stage outfits and theatrics and quickly got the audience involved in their experimental musical mayhem.
Spermatic Chord live at The Fringe Club
The material is an intriguing blend of trumpet, trombone, guitar, vocals laid over a solid foundation of drums and bass guitar. The set opened with an almost bluesy, jazzy intro on guitar, trumpet, trombone ,clarinet and drums complemented by some intense vocals, followed by a quirky cover of Supermario Bros.2 (yes, the game song),complete with some crazy dancing. The band may be postrock but they upped the tempo for the final song which was quite rocking. You say party,we say Spermatic Chord!
The Yours at HK Live
The Yours, a Hong Kong band influenced by shoegaze and bands like Ride
The Yours are an upcoming Hong Kong band formed in 2005.Their sound is almost the polar oppsite of SC.For dreaming ,substitute driving, for exploratory ,direct. They know exactly what they want to do and do it with a vengeance. The band are a mixture of the fuzzed out guitar sounds of shoegaze and the the restless energy of punk, backed by a driving rhythm section with Azia on Bass and Ho on drums. They also have the advantage of dual vocals in Jack and Nic.Of their excellent five song set I really loved the versions of 'Abraham','Tasteless' and the more dreamy ''Missed Call'.A great set from one of Hong Kong's best bands and the crowd loved it.

The pEnElOpEs
The PEnElOpEs are a synth/pop duo from France. They have prestiguous fans among the art set,and are influenced by labels like Factoryand 4AD.They also have a liking for unusual old school electronica. There were some interesting hints of Joy Division and Kraftwerk but it was mainly catchy dance pop with a strong synthesised beat. It wasn't 'Moon Safari' or anything like it but the dual vocals worked well. There were obviously a lot of fans of the band at the Fringe Club and they brought the evening to a close with some very danceable electro-pop but with an edge of something darker
